In 1860 Amos had one schoolhouse which served students from grades K-8th grade; however this school closed around 1865 because of financial difficulties during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1870 there were six businesses that operated within downtown Ames: three grocery stores (Jno Hemsley & Son's Grocery Company; Wm Sorenson's Drugstore), two dry goods stores (Oscar Bemis & Co.; Geo Flemming Dry Goods Depot), and two tanneries (George Matson & Bros.). By 1880 there were twenty businesses operating within downtown Ames: eleven grocery stores (Jno Hemsley & Sons Grocery Company; Oscar Bemis & Co.), ten dry goods stores ( Geo Flemming Dry Goods Depot; George Matson & Bros.), two tanneries (Moses French’s Lumber Yard and Chasuble’s Brickyard and Woolen Mills), four laundry facilities (+ one each at Meadowlarket Hotel and First National Bank), three hotels (+ three each at Meadowlarket Hotel and First National Bank) and twelve farmsteads (- four). Some of the early pioneers who founded or moved to Ames included Reverend Jacob Grimm who arrived about 1840 from Germany via Ellis Island; Moses French who settled around 1850 near what is now South Park Mall; John Galt who arrived about 1854 from Illinois via Burlington Canal; Elihu Butterfield who came about 1850 from Vermont via Rock Island Riverboat journey; James Emmet Mahoney from New York City who arrived about 1860 along with his family soon after coming downriver from Canada aboard HMS Beagle under Captain Cook's expedition;; Augustus Saint John Atchison arriving party 5 September 1862 aboard SS Prairie Queen off Block Islandressed USS Pompano his father Andrew Atchison also came ashore but died shortly after landing at Steubenville Ohio
