Altoona is a town in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first Post Office in Altoona was established on July 14, 1871. In 1933, it merged with Cedar Rapids and became the third city in Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. Altoona was organized as a town on February 3, 1892. It grew rapidly due to its location near the New Mexico border and its accessibility to railroads. Construction began on what would become the first municipal building in Altoona- a two-story wood frame structure built by J.H. White & Sons lumber company employees. On October 25 of that year, citizens voted to name their new town after George Washington." The community soon grew too small for its own government and needed help from Cedar Rapids so that it could levy taxes and build public services such as schools and hospitals. That relationship continues today; both cities are part of the Altoona-Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area (ARCMA). In 1933, when Cedar Rapids annexed Altoona into its municipality, there were only 486 residents living in Altoona compared to 2,089 residents in Cedar Rapids proper! This annexation spurred heavy development within the boundaries of what would eventually become known as "The Quad". buildings started popping up all over downtown including one called "The Bloomingdesk" which still stands today!
