Altoona was founded in 1847 by Levi Strauss and his wife, Sara. The town name comes from a stream called Altoona Creek that flows through the community. In 1848, Almira Aldrich organized a women's Temperance Society in Altoona and began to drink alcohol for fun. By 1850, the society had evolved into the first female temperance society in Iowa. In 1852, Congress passed the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution which banned liquor sales within twenty miles of any public school. This amendment also made Altoona one of only four cities in Iowa to ratify it. Altoona quickly became an important manufacturing center due to its access to water resources and its location at the confluence of two major rivers. The city’s industries include paper mills, leather tanneries, agricultural products, and construction materials such as brick and tile. Many of these businesses remain active today including Papermate (now Proctor & Gamble), Alcoa (former aluminum producer), Frito-Lay (formerly Layered Company), and Monsanto (now Bayer). Many famous people have lived or gone through their careers in Altoona including: Levi Strauss himself who founded Via Rail; John Denny who co-founded Des Moines National Bank; Edwin Hubble who discovered Hubble Telescope; Harry S Truman who was vice president under Eisenhower; Betty Ford who was First Lady of America during the Nixon administration; Glenn Beck who is currently host of Fox News Channel’s “The Glenn Beck Show”; Bill Clinton whose presidency saw significant progress advancements for women like health care reform and passage of NAFTA; actor Tom Hanks who grew up hereabouts; writer Barbara Bush whose husband George WBush served as President of Texas.; journalist Bob Woodward whose book "Angels on Horseback" revealed details about Washington D C politics
