A Brief History of Altoona, Iowa Altoona was founded in 1847 as a small community on the banks of the Arkoma River. The town grew rapidly due to its position as an important stagecoach stop on the Burlington, Iowa-Kansas City, Kansas railroad. With its location at the edge of Indian Territory (now Oklahoma), Altoona was able to trade goods with Native Americans and support their culture. In 1893, when Iowa lost its statehood status, Altoona became part of member state Missouri. However, by 1905, when Missouri merged into Kansas City County (now Kansas), Altoona had become an integral part of that county – home to some of KCK’s largest businesses such as Cement Works and A&P grocery store. Over time, other businesses have come and gone but the Anchor Brewing Company has remained a dominant force in downtown Altoona for over 60 years now! Today, there are many different types of businesses located in downtown Altona including restaurants, bars & clubs/nightlife venues sadly no Waffle House though we do have two locations open: One right next door at 5th & Market Streets called "Waffle House" - which still serves up delicious waffles every morning (come see us!) - while also housing several art galleries including "The Fine Arts Gallery", which specializes in American Craftsmanship; both located inside Mahalia Jackson Hall on 4th Street between Independence Avenue & Market Streets - perfect for findingartisan handicrafts or browsing contemporary art!

Altoona is a small town in Iowa, located in the eastern portion of the state. The population was 9,260 at the 2010 census. Altoona is one of four towns in Iowa that are both rural and city-based. It is also the only city in Iowa with a combined population of over 10,000 people. Altoona was founded by two German settlers in 1853 as a stop on their way from Dubuque to Council Bluffs. The original settlement was located near what is now downtown Altoona and consisted of about 20 buildings. By 1865, however, it had become apparent that the town would not grow quickly enough to support a full-time community police force and so a committee was formed to find an appropriate site for the new Police Department Headquarters. After careful consideration they chose what is now Parkview Drive NE, which became home to the new Police Department building in 1907. A local paper called "The Altoona Observer" began publication on December 12, 1857, which served as the first daily newspaper inIowa; it continued publication until 1903 when it moved to Des Moines and changed its name to "The Register". In 1905 local resident Harry Kelman donated 5 acres (2 km²) adjacent to present day Parkview Drive NE for use as a public square; Kelman named this square after himself. In 1922 Congress passed legislation establishing The University of Iowa at Urbana-Champaign as part of The Prairie View A&M System; Altoona became one of three cities within Iowanowest Technology College (later Illinois Institute Of Technology). In 1984 Iowanowest Tech closed its doors and merged with UI Bloomington; Altoona remained an independent city until 2001 when it amalgamated with UI Carbondale along with other cities within Iowanowest Tech Colleges system into one university: UI Carbondale-Altoona campus. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture although there are some businesses such as health care clinics providing services outside of agriculture . There are also several large companies included within manufacturing including Alcoa aluminum products and United Technologies Corp., who produce turbines for power plants across America . One recent development has been construction around downtown Altoona of low income housing units known as The Commons
