When Altoona, Iowa was founded in 1855, it was the first town in the United States to have a gunsmithing shop open for business. The gunsmiths here were responsible for making and repairing firearms. They also made muzzle brakes and other necessary parts for pistols. In 1903, a group of men from Altoona formed the Philadelphian Club and beganimporting firearms from England. This led to a new era of firearm production in Altoona. From 1903 to 1968, there were total of 54 different manufacturers registered with the US ATF (the predecessor to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). During that time period, Altoona produced over 1 million firearms! Today there are still many businesses in town that makeguns. Some of these businesses include: Armory Arms & Ammunition Center (manufacturing AR-15 rifles), Brownells Gun Shop (manufacturing handguns), Rifleworks (manufacturing shotguns), and Shotguns Unlimited ( Manufacturing shotguns). There is also an annualGun show held at the Alamodome which features hundreds of guns from all over the world.
