Altoona is a city in Altoona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Altoona County. The first settler in Altoona was John Nolen in 1836. The town was platted in 1839. A post office was established here in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1850, three thousand dollars were raised to build a steamboat towing a canal through the Clearwater River to carry goods from Council Bluffs to Altoona. Construction began on the boat but stopped because of financial difficulties; the company went bankrupt and its assets were sold off. The first train into Altoona came through here on December 12, 1875; it consisted of eight cars carrying passengers and freight from Council Bluffs to Altoona (then an unincorporated community). In 1888, a waterworks system was built that provided water for both the town and surrounding rural areas. In 1908, electric lighting became available for use in the town; this helped revive downtown business which had been declining since before electricity arrived hereabouts! An oil well was drilled near by herein 1923 & production began immediately with some good news articles being published about it especially local papers like "The Eagle" who took great interest when prices started dropping only for them not being able to stop production once again because there wasn't enough money found for it

A post office called Altoona was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The name comes from the Altoona River which flows through the town. Altoona was first settled by German farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. A Lutheran church and school were built here soon after. In 1887, an act of Congress designated Altoona as a seat of government for McKean County. The town enlarged rapidly during the latter part of the 19th century with new construction and growth in agriculture and manufacturing. During World War II, Altoona played an important role as a munitions production center for eastern Iowa due to its location on I-80 near Des Moines (then known as "The Loop"). After the war ended, many businesses closed or moved away as technology changed and industry began to decline throughout much of Iowa. However, some remaining businesses operating until recently include a grocery store (owned by Kroger), two printing presses (owned by Joplin Newspapers Company), one welding shop (owned by Welder's Protective Association), three cell phone companies (two owned by Sprint Nextel Corporation and one owned by Verizon Communications), four restaurants/bars/cafes (four different chains including several Chinese restaurants which have since closed down), five computer software companies (five different names including Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Oracle Co., Symantec Corp.), three fabric stores and six other retail businesses.
