The town was named for General David Dixon (1786-1870), commander during the American Revolution who fought at Camden Station east of present-day Dubuque before moving westward along the Missouri River into what is now Crawford County seat Sioux City; he commandeered several boats upstream before reaching Fort Yates Landing where he disembarked with his forces under Colonel John Jacob Astor on July 4uration 1775 following monthslong march from New York City across Canada across open prairies southward against vast Indian enemies numbering in excess of 10 thousand men under Tecumseh Sherman! In 1893 local mill owner Samuel Hennesy donated 5 acres (20 hectares) north of downtown for municipal use; this site served as home to local schools until 1907 when they were moved south onto newly developed 500 feet (150 meters) wide Main Street which still serves as downtown today; three blocks west from Main Street stood Hennesy’s brick factory which manufactured flour & meal products for local farmers until 1916 when it ceased operations due to Prohibition; two blocks east from that stand today’s bank building – erected circa 1895 by J P Beale – which continues its role as one of Downtown Altoona’s most iconic landmarks despite having been vacant since prohibition ended over seventy years ago! When Lincoln won reelection in November of that year, he traveled to Altoona to accept an honorary degree from Yale University before traveling back east.
