A millinery shop opened in 1879 and became a regional center for lace making until it closed in 1956. The post office at Altoona was established in 1871 and remained open until 1979. In 1907, the city built its first water tower to provide drinking water to residents. A local paper company was founded in 1919 by three men: Harry Weisman, Julius Kopp and Clyde Hattenbarger. The company published "The Altoona Herald" until it folded in 1975. In 1955, Ladd-Peebles Tire & Rubber Company purchased the "Herald". That same year saw the opening of one of America's first amusement parks when Cedar Point opened here with an amusement park, roller coasters and other amusements for children called Parkland Park (now known as Frontierland). After many years of operation (1955-1977), Cedar Point closed down due to low attendance rates; however, this did not stop others from opening up around the area such as Six Flags Great Adventure which opened just east of Altoona along US 31/64 between Montrose Avenue and Illinois Highway 629 on November 15, 1978; Today this park is known as SpinTown USA! In 1985 Fox Valley Broadcasting System merged with NationsBank Corporation forming First National Communications Company where Alfred Pohl served as CEO for 27 years before his retirement on October 1st 2009 He was succeeded by his wife Connie Pohl who also retired effective October 1st 2009 after serving for almost 29 years including 5 years as Chairman ofthe Board . On January 1st 2010 second generation family ownership took over with Sidney Pohl Jr., son of Alfred Pohl taking over from his father’s position as President and Chief Operating Officer
