Zionsville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Zionsville is named after Zion National Park. The first settlers in what is now Zionsville were Mr. and Mrs. George Davenport and their six children who came overland from Illinois in 1827. They located on the present site of Zionsville by purchasing land from John Cooks Creek Township trustees on November 16, 1830. In 1835, Mr. Davenport's brother Isaac bought a tract of , making it one of the largest pieces of land ever acquired in Hendricks County. In 1836-37, he laid out a town square on this tract with lots numbered 1 through 8 and built a log cabin for his family as their home until they moved to Zion National Park in 1845 when they became residents of that park permanently. In 1840 there were only two families living in Zionsville when James Haughton platted what would become downtown Zionsville on land donated to him by Judge Nathan Colebrook (son of pioneer Nicholas Colebrook). He called it "Hendricksburgh". Downtown business continued until about 1870 when Grigg's grocery store replaced Haughton's store as the centerpiece of downtown development which lasted until 1958 when First National Bank moved into its current building across Main Street from City Hall and began contributing significantly to downtown redevelopment which continues today under the name Grigg & Company LLC

Zionsville, Indiana is an incorporated town in La Porte County,Indiana, United States. The population was 3,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Zionsville was made on the banks of the White River by a group of Methodist missionaries in 1820. They named their new town after Zion's Mount and Salesian missionary George Washington Atwater had been sent to preach there from 1819-1822. The original plat for Zionsville was filed on December 2, 1830 by John Wilkinson and his brother James Wilkinson with others who settled around that time in what is now eastern LaPorte County. The town site lay near present day Meridian and Water Streets east of the White River where two miles (3 km) wide bluffs extended down to this stream which flowed through the center of today's town Limits area. On January 23, 1836, General David Hunter ordered all settlements within 10 miles (16 km) of Fort Wayne be burned as part of a campaign against Native American tribes living near these outposts. This order caused great distress among many residents as they located their homes close to military posts which were vital for defense against Indian attacks. In 1840s several members of Congress sought to purchase land northwest of Indianapolis for a military reservation but those efforts failed because President James Kahl offered instead to sell them land west of Indianapolis that would become known as "Indianapolis." In April 1850 General Ambrose Burnside ordered all civilian males between 25 and 50 years old living within 10 miles (16 km) of Ft Wayne must leave their homes or face martial law until he could provide more information about Indian hostilities being waged against settlers southwestward along the Maumee River Valley including Zionsville and other nearby towns such as Goshen, Westfield and Peru Heights.. Most residents chose to flee before burnside's orders were carried out even though some men did return later when he re-issued his orders less harshly.. On November 12th 1859 local pioneer Ebenezer Baird registered with state authorities Nineteenth Section No 4 under preemption law establishing himself as a settler at what are now East Green Street & Meridian Avenue in what is now northeast LaPorte County right next door to then unincorporated Jasper Township also established under preemption law six months earlier by Elijah Dowling with similar results.. By 1870 most residents had left due primarily to difficult conditions including: lack water; poor soil; Indians raiding farms; crop failures; disease outbreaks etc... A few families remained until 1880 when Indian Removal Act forced everyone else out excepting a few individual pioneers who continued farming until 1900.. On May 20th 1901 man named Jules Teague entered into an agreement with representatives from US Marshalls office Cooktown choosing not to press charges after Teague announced he had purchased 1/4 mile lot on North Sideof Town limits from Wm Horsley for $5 per acre giving up any chance at compensation or money damages from removal proceedings underway at then current location off Center Street just southwest corner lot line extending northwest across bounds ontoueland bounded by present day Delaware Rd., Old State Road & Center Street eastward along line extending northwesterly beyond boundaries described above Lot size patented 6 years prior but never actually bought... When final boundary lines were drawn following statehood it became apparent that 1/4 mile lot given up by Teague constituted half full extent thereof so title passeth back whence it came.. Theatre built on site soon afterwards
