Zionsville, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Zions County, Indiana, United States. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. In 1827, John Stephenson founded Stephenson & Stephenson Grain Mill south of town on Clearwater Creek with some farmland he had acquired from Merrill and other settlers near present-day Uniontown . Stephenson operated this mill until it burned down in 1892 during a severe winter storm that swept through centralIndiana . Zionsville is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 5,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is the birthplace of Hoosier Joe Biden. The first European to set foot in what became Zionsville was Nicholas_Bourbon in 1795. Bourbons were landowners who tilled and cultivated land near present-day Zionsville; their holdings spanned much of central and southern Indiana. In 1814, the Bourbons sold their holdings to General David Wilkinson, who founded the city of Warsaw on a tract of land he had purchased from Nicholas Bourbon. The name "Warsaw" was chosen because it sounded like a military victory slogan - "Vengeance for Warsaw!" - which then served as an appellation for all future Polishtown settlements in central and southern Indiana (and also Illinois). In 1827, General John Fenton founded another settlement called Lafayette on some nearby property that had been relinquished by Wilkinson. Lafayette grew rapidly due to its proximity to Warsaw, but soon experienced financial difficulties due to overspending on goods produced there instead of within its own boundaries. Fenton negotiated with several other investors to purchase his assets, including some lands now located within Zionsville proper limits. On July 12, 1830, when Fenton's assets were finally paid off and he retired from business life after many years of experience, Zionsville incorporated as a townsite under the laws of Indiana Territory (later statehood). That same year saw the organization of one or more local banks: First National Bank (1830), State Bank (1832), Merchants National Bank (1834), Citizens National Bank (1835). During this time period also came important civic changes: James Harker became elected mayor in 1830; Caleb Pryor succeeded him two years later; Solomon Pratt became first constable in 1839; Josephine Pendleton became first woman ever elected as president pro tempore of the Board of Education in 1840; Enoch Pratt organized settlers into a Methodist church congregation in 1841; Anthony Quarles was elected recorder in 1845; John Withers served as postmaster from 1861 until his death in 1865; Frederick Ladd began construction on what would eventually become Purdue University's Memorial Stadium (); during that same time period too numerous individuals have contributed important services or accomplishments to ZionsVILLE such as Ezra Taft Benson being born here on October 25th 1893
