Zionsville is a small town in northern Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Zionsville were American Indians who traveled north from Illinois in 1679 and 2016. In 1793, Zionsville was founded by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the main stage road between Fort Wayne and Muncie (now Indianapolis). The post served as a stop on the Northwest Indian Express Trail. A new post was built in 1814 by Major John Potter and named for Richard Stockton, 3rd Baron Stockton of Lancashire (1768-1846), an English statesman who had been secretary to President George Washington during the War of 1812. In 1815, Potters Post became known as "Potter's Store" after its owner, Colonel Solomon Potter Jr., moved there from Warsaw, Indiana with his family. By 1830 the store had become an engine house used for threshing corn on our large field near present day Main Street and Third Avenue South. In 1840-41 we sent five teams of horses to Macon County to be used in driving hogs from that county into this area so that we could get bacon for our grills here at home! In 1861 Zionsville became one of thirteen towns in Terry County when it was organized from parts of Dearborn and Posey Counties; but it did not develop until after annexation by Terre Haute in 1886 when it became a city under charter granted by Governor Morton Johnston.. On November 6th 1906 Mayor C H Latham announced that they would build a new water tower just south of their old water tower which had been abandoned for years due to bad weather conditions; this project cost $6 million dollars which included raising over 60 miles of pipeline! During the Civil War, ZionsVILLE saw heavy fighting on its behalf as part of Union forces against Confederate forces. After the war, many businesses closed down due to lack of business opportunity or competition from other towns in the region. However, some notable businesses that continued to thrive after the war include Papp’s grocery store which remained open until 1938 and later became JCPenney; First National Bank which continued to operate until 1970; and Armour Paper Company which operated until 1984 when it merged with DuPont Corporation to form Peabody Coal & Coke Company. In 2001, Zionsville was recognized as a “Historic Place” by Indiana Department of Education pursuant to state statute §5-2-3-4a. Today, ZIONSVILLE remains an important community located within Allen County with a rich history that is still being experienced today by its residents and visitors alike
Zionsville was founded in 1814 as a small log cabin by a group of Indiana Baptists. The first settler, John Zions, built the cabin on the banks of the White River. In 1830, Zionsville became the capital of Marshall County and was named after James K. Polk, then president of the United States. On November 22nd, 1836, Zionsville was platted as the town of Zionsville and became an important transportation hub for farmers and traders travelling to and from neighboring Illinois. By 1860, Zionsville had become a thriving city with over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents. In 1892, zinc mining began in nearby Randolph County and soon led to growth in Zionsville as manufacturing centers emerged around the metal extraction process. By 1970, zinc production had ceased in Zionsville but it remains an important economic center today with over 50 businesses operating within its boundaries
