Zionsville is a small town in Noble County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 by Joshua Ziegler and his wife Deborah Ann Ziegler. The first post office in Zionsville was established on December 12, 1847, and was called Zion. The present name of the town was chosen by commissioners from neighboring towns on November 21, 1853. The original plat of the town shown to the public in February 1854 included a farmstead measuring three acres (one hectare). A mill had been built earlier in the year but it failed to produce flour for local markets. The first store opened in January 1857 and continued to operate until about 1886 when it became an agency store for the Noble and Hendricks families who operated a general store there until 1889. In 1901 the business passed into ownership of Mr. & Mrs. Prentice who ran it until 1910 when it reopened as an independent store under the name of Zionsville Store Company which continued operation until 1971 when it closed its doors forever due to economic reasons; however, some remnants remain today as part of Shoprite Supermarkets division. In 1915 flood damage caused by heavy rains destroyed most of downtown with only four blocks remaining standing before reconstruction began with help from philanthropist Augustus Saint-Gaudens who donated land for what is now known as Main Street; this brought about new shopping opportunities for residents which continue to this day including several restaurants and a movie theater complex that replaced one destroyed during World War II but still stands today as one of Noble County's largest employers along with two convenience stores/grocery stores dating back to 1926 and 1954 respectively Zionsville also saw major development beginning in 1937 when construction began on what is now known as Fourth Street between Main and Second Streets becoming home to numerous businesses including Jardine’s Department Stores (now Sears) while also hosting numerous social events such as dances at Parkview Cemetery attended by dignitaries such as Ulysses S Grant In 1955 Zionsville became home to America’s first drive-in movie theater with Regal Cinema opening their doors just north of Fourth Street across from Jardines department store; these renovated theaters continue today operations serving audiences through digital projection
