In the early 1800s, handguns were not common in the United States. The only way to own a gun was to either be born into a wealthy family or purchase it from a military officer. But beginning in 1851, there was an effort by Congress to pass regulation of firearms in the country. This culminated with the National Firearms Act of 1934 which banned most handguns and made it illegal for civilians to possess machineguns and other assault rifles without a license from the government. However, these Regulations did not take into account advances in technology that had led to new types of handguns being developed such as pistols and revolvers. In 1949, Zionsville became one of the first communities in America to allow handgun ownership by civilians with an exception for law enforcement officers. In 1836, Andrew Johnson's administration established Fort Wayne as an Explored Territory with authority over all land west of what is now I-465 northward to Lake Michigan - including present day Zionsville - due largely to concerns over Native American activity near or within present day NorthwestIndian Village locations such as Wabash River and Miami Lakes riverside communities including Goshen Township, White River Township, Sigourney Township., etc.. In 1839, US Army Major General David Dixon organized a force consisting primarily of Missourians under command Major General John Custer into what would become known as The Battle Of Black Bottom (also known as The Little Bighorn), where Custer's forces routing 5 Sioux Nation warriors led by Chief Joseph Lickliter successfully defended theirMandan village against an numerically superior invading Ulysses S. Grant's 7th Cavalry Regiment who had been sent there pursuant to Treaty#3signed between President James K Ford & Chief Menominee War chief Tecumseh on July 12,1838 & succeeded in driving out all but 3 members of this small band led by Lickliter some seventy miles southeastward along Green Creek thence across open prairies northeastward along Elk River (present day Hwy 146)to Clearwater Lake near modern Dubois Junction before returning back upstream via Cut Bank Rapids downstream pastmodern Springtown towards Ft Wayne landing along present day Hwy 46 near Newport en route To Wichita Falls creek crossing forts McNairy & Browning opposite Warsaw Twp., Kansas side
