Zionsville is a small, unincorporated community in Monroe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the Kankakee River. The first post office in Zionsville was established in 1837. The name of the town came from Zion Chapel which stood near the original town site. In 1868, a sawmill and gristmill were built in what is now Zionsville. They were among the earliest mills in that area and remain operational to this day. Zionsville also became home to an agricultural fairgrounds which served as a market for local farmers until 1924 when it moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1925, Zionsville's first bank opened with $5,000 from John Hildebrandt and his brother-in-law Harry Wittell. At that time, banking was still a new technology in America and there was no such thing as a checking account or savings account at that time! In 1928-29, electricity began flowing through Zionsville when the Clinton Bridge crossed over the Kankakee River; this made all sorts of improvements including better transportation options for residents which led to more business opportunities for locals like Mr. Hildebrandt who started his own grocery store nearby on Market Street called "The Grits". Zionsville also experienced its first professional football game when its high school team played against Logansport High School on October 25th 1920; these days we would say "Munchie's Play ground" but back then it was simply called "The Game House". In 1951-52 (the last season of varsity football), Zionsville participated in their very first championship game against “Big Red” (now Elkhart) High School; they lost by 10 points but it still counts because that’s how much respect our town had back then! From there on out things really picked up for our little community as businesses grew larger and more people started moving here from around central Indiana looking for good schools and easy access to jobs! By 1997-98 (the year before my grandparents passed away), we had grown so large that we decided it was time to move our Community Hall downtown – something we have been doing ever since! We are grateful every day that those early pioneers kept things moving forward here by setting an example themselves while helping us grow into what we are today! Today’s residents of Zionsville celebrate everything from Independence Day through Memorial Day with picnics and carnivals – just another reminder why this place has always been special to us!
