By 1830, there were twenty homes and fifty-four businesses in Zionsville when it incorporated as a village under the name “Village” on July 1st that year with Jno Dyer as its first treasurer/manager In 1832, Andrew Rooney moved his family from New York City to become residents of what would later become known as "Zion" following his purchase of 640 acres (24 hectares) east of present day Zionsville along I-465 northward from Terre Haute, Indiana Territory Rooney had been involved with buying and selling lands around Goshen since 1798 while working for Benjamin Franklin Smith who also owned extensive tracts within modern day Butler County After arriving in Butler County he began surveying property which eventually formed today's downtown portion including parts of boulevard across street from post office
