Westfield, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 108,855 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth most populous city in Indiana and its metropolitan area has a population of 547,545. Westfield is one of seventeen cities and towns in the Evansville–Fayette County Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 1,815,639 as of July 2015. The history of Westfield goes back to 1824 when James Wilkinson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) along the Wabash River from French investors for $5 per acre ($10 million today). In 1828 Wilkinson donated land for what would become downtown; he named it "Wilkinson's Bloomingland." A year later he donated additional land to build what became known as "Westfield." The name reflected Wilkinson's hope that this new community would be "the blooming field where innocent children might learn how to pluck flowers and grow crops." The original town site included only about two-thirds of present-day Westfield. In 1850, residents voted to incorporate as a village; by 1857 they had erected a schoolhouse and built five blocks on the east side of Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets. By 1861 all but one block on Main had been filled in with brick buildings housing stores, workshops, churches and other public services – including jail cells – while yet more blocks were added over time. In 1865 Union troops burned down part of downtown during an artillery bombardment after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House. This event helped spur development southward such as riverfront retail districts such as Marriotte Landing on the Wabash River or Piggly Wiggly across Second Street from State Fairgrounds into what are now parts of downtown Indianapolis and North Central Indiana Universities complexes like Ballenger Hall on East Grand Avenue near I-465 then University Circle around Purdue University before reaching Southport Drive near Interstate 465 in suburban Fort Wayne immediately northwest of Warsaw Racetrack Road outside Greenwood Village outside Kingfisher Airport just east side Glendale Premium Outlet mall leavening southwesternwest suburban Phoenix suburbs soon formingPhoenix–Mesa Corridor sprawled out between Phoenixville inside Philadelphia suburb Phila., Lansdale Township outside Allentown PA., Aston Villa & surrounding areas
