Westfield is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Posey County. The population was 69,521 as of 2010. It is located on the west bank of the White River, about 20 miles north-northwest of Indianapolis and 30 miles south-southwest of Chicago. The first permanent settler in what would become Westfield was James Witherspoon, who arrived in 1799 and platted what would become Westfield Township on March 11, 1800. He named it for his brother-in-law Sir William Westfeldt, 1st Baronet (1763–1839), who had settled in that area two years earlier. A year later, Witherspoon's son John Witherspoon donated land to established Starke Township adjoining him on the east side of the river for settlement by French immigrants seeking to escape religious persecution in Europe at that time. In 1802, he sold his interest in Starke Township to Amos Davenport and others for $6,000 cash; this township became part of Westfield Township on November 3, 1802. In 1806, John Wesley Powell discovered gold near present day Poseyville while exploring for Indian coal mines near Crawfordsville; when asked by President Andrew Johnson if he could chart a course through those hills so as to reach it without being seen byible people or killed as an explorer (Johnson felt that exploration should be left up to America's future leaders like Washington), Wesley Powell replied "No; I will go there myself."
