The United States acquired this land from the Creek Nation in 1836 as part of the Treaty of Fort Wayne. The first permanent settlers in what is now Westfield came in 1853 when William P. White built a cabin on land which he had bought from a Cherokee chief.

Westfield is a city in and the county seat of Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 11,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The city was founded on July 1, 1824 by General David Dixon as Westfield Township. On April 4, 1829, it became a town and on January 15, 1830 it became a city. On December 12, 1830, it was made a state capital and on February 14, 1832 it became an important railroad junction. In 1862–1863 the Union army burned much of downtown Westfield during its march through southern Indiana to Cairo. In 1865–1867 the west side of downtown was razed to make way for new office buildings and factories that were built there after westward expansion began in that decade. In 1890s construction began on what would become Purdue University's first main campus - now known as Old Main - in what had been part of Westfield since 1800. That university moved into its present building on May 25th of that year (a few weeks after Coordinating Board meeting). This event marks also the beginning of Purdue's long relationship with Ohio State University which persists to this day (Purdue students still attend OSU classes even though they are located in different states). In 1907-1910 WW US Army found lead ore near town and started milling lead soon after opening; this led to heavy industry being developed around town including auto production from 1931 until 1965 when all lead production came to an end due to high costs associated with mining Leadville instead In 1930 Mayor George Wetherbee announced plans for development along Post Road across from current site where local residents had proposed using their land for housing developments called "The Woods". The project never progressed beyond concept because of money difficulties but some early evidence suggests that developers may have encountered earthmoving problems while trying to move large rocks underlying Post Road which could not be easily lifted without damaging them
