Westfield is an incorporated town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,672 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Porter County by population. The name Westfield originated from a post office called "Westerville" which was established in 1836. The first Europeans to visit this area were French fur traders who camped near what is now Westfield on December 2, 1795. A group of British soldiers under the command of Colonel James Wilkinson traveled past Westerville on their way to Fort Wayne and wintering there encountered a band ofIndians who had been living near present day Westfield while they hunted deer and small game. After learning about the region's rich mineral resources, the British decided to erect a military fort at Westerville in order to protect these resources from Indian attack. In 1834, President Andrew Jackson appointed General David Dixon as Commander-in-Chief of all Union forces west of the Mississippi River. Upon his arrival at Louisville, Kentucky on February 12th, he learned that General Hindman was planning an expedition against Nashville which would include marching through Porter County and into central Indiana Territory without warning the people ahead of time. Dixon immediately ordered General Hindman not to proceed and instead march through Woodford County into Louisville where he could be sure that no one would be able to oppose him unimpeded. This event is known as TheBattleofPopestown which ended with Major General David Dickson’s strategic victory over General Hindman’s army for control of Indianapolis (and much else). In 1835, when territorial boundaries were finalized following The Treaty of Erie between Great Britain and America, part of Porter County remained within Indiana Territory while another part became Illinois Territory. In anticipation of this change in state borders, representatives from both states met at Terre Haute on October 20th 1835 in order to resolve certain outstanding issues related to local government and roads within Porter County including those necessary for wagon traffic between Bloomington and Terre Haute during those early days before steamboats arrived providing transportation across Lake Michigan Dixon renamed Westerville after himself because he felt that it should become a center for trade with surrounding counties as well as serve as a rallying point for troops stationed eastward along the Ohio River Valley during this time period waiting for orders back home . In 1840 when Huckabee moved from Wabash Falls into Price Township some residents wanted their own township so they founded Westfield Township on April 6th 1840 When Price Township was organized it contained parts of current Webster Township also forming part of Price since it was organized less than two weeks after Weston took its name .
