Westfield, Indiana is a city in the United States located in NorthwestIndiana on the banks of the White River. The population was 102,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Westfield comes from an Indian scout named John Smith who traveled through this area in 1676 and noted that there were "a great many people living near to us on both sides of the river." In 1824, landowner Solomon Northrop donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of what would become Westfield to be used as a village square. The village name originated with one of Northrop's daughters, who called her home "WestField." In 1837, construction began on what would become Northwestern Indiana's first courthouse and jail; these structures still stand today. On December 15, 1853, President James K. Polk appointed John Davenport as Secretary of Agriculture after he won a close election against Zachary Taylor. Davenport played an important role in developing Purdue University into one of America's leading universities and helped create modern agriculture techniques while also working to promote American industry abroad. He died suddenly less than two months later at age 53 from pneumonia caused by yellow fever which he contracted while traveling in Cuba during that time period. On January 6, 1854 – one week before his death – Davenport was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery with full military honors due to his position as secretary when General Ulysses S. Grant visited India for military engagements there just prior to his inauguration as president four years later on January 20th 1865 A day after his death – February 5th 1865 – services were held at Stonington Presbyterian Church where he had been baptized three years earlier.. In 1870–71 Wabash Railroad built its line between Terre Haute and Lafayette Junction carrying passengers and freight over sand dunes until it abandoned operations within two miles (3 km) of Westfield proper along its current route just south of I-465 east of downtown Indianapolis when a new bridge was completed across White River Parkway opened in 1967 replacing an earlier span which had been destroyed by flooding following heavy rains six months earlier.. It was not until 1941 that Interstate 65 bypassed town altogether when it was built concurrent with US-6 making it much easier for trucks travelling through town on I-65 instead having to go out onto I-465 past downtown Indy then continue down I-465 past South Bend before terminating at US-6 about 2 miles (3 km) north west of Westfield proper.. The population grew rapidly from 25 residents per 1000 residents in 1940 to over 100 per 1000 residents by 1950 thanks largely to World War II veterans moving into town during the war era.. In 1954–55 school consolidation took place throughout northwest Indiana resulting in impact upon town’s demographics although some original small schools continued operation until 1956 when enrollment reached almost 400 students according to some sources however others report only about 130 students remained by 1960 due mainlyto increased vehicular traffic including those visiting nearby Purdue University along US 6 outside town limits .. Growth stalled thereafter with few new homes being built until recent decades when development has resumed somewhatalbeit slowly primarilywithin town boundaries more recently adding several thousand jobs or more annually since 2000qqqqqqqqqqqqq
