In 1851–52, construction began on what are now downtown Westfield blocks by blocks with two exceptions: One block had only one building built - an hotel called the White House - while the other had five buildings built; these were known as "The Five Buildings." The first name change did not reflect changes in population or economic development; instead it reflected Indian Wars fought between American Indians and Ulysses S. Grant's forces during that time period. The city continued to grow rapidly through annexation of neighboring towns until it reached its current size in 1908 when Indianapolis annexed more land including parts of Northwest Indiana also becoming part of Indianapolis proper. When New York City lost its patent for manufacturing areas within its boundaries in 1901-02 due to competition from corporation-owned plants near Chicago, Purdue University President James Wickersham lobbied unsuccessfully for Indianapolis to become the center for industrial production in central Indiana so Purdue could be self-reliant financially without being dependent upon New York City's support system for financing research programs related to industrial advancements such as automotive engineering. After years of effort by Purdue faculty members and Wickersham himself, Westfield achieved this goal when he persuaded then Governor James Eshoo to sign legislation establishing Purdue University's Center for Industrial Technology which later grew into IIT.
