Westfield, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 41,564 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Indiana and part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The history of Westfield dates back to 1824 when it was founded as a small trading post on the east bank of the White River by fur traders from Canada. In 1829, General Harrison sold land in what is now Westfield to Thaddeus Stevens for $10,000. In 1846, Stevens built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street in downtown Westfield. The first post office was established in this location on December 2, 1846. By 1860, most of present day Westfield had been developed including portions of today's Elm and Washington Streets. In 1881–82, local businessmen James H. Cook and Wm Aiken organized an education boycott of then-newly created Purdue University because its tuition rates were too high forNormal graduates (at that time Normal School operated only within Indiana). Purdue students traveled to Bloomington to lecture against high tuition at nearby Normal schools before returning home to tell their parents about their experiences there. This eventually led to Normal giving up its right to charge higher tuition rates than other institutions outside its state borders during the tenure of Governor John Evans (1881–87). In 1896 four young men – Cyrus McCormick Jr., David Lawrence Wright Sr., Myron Ebell – founded Wabash Railroad Company with help from banker George McCormick III; they named it after their mentor Cyrus McCormick who had helped found Illinois Central Railway Company fifteen years earlier. In 1907 Wabash merged with Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company forming North Western Railway which became part of CSX Transportation Corporation in 1996. With over 12 million passengers served each year by Amtrak through its network—the largest network in North America—CSX played an important role throughout American rail history. The original buildings associated with Wabash remain significant today: two blocks northof Main Street between Elm and Washington Streets are The Livery House (now demolished) and East Depot where trains stopped for refueling or repairs; both were built around 1840. The company also acquired two adjacent parcels on State Road 516 south which became known as "The Gables" due to their distance from mainsteam facilities; these properties would later be used as headquarters for Wabash Operations until 1958 when they were replaced by new buildings located near current day Southgate Drive. Finally one block northeast corner High Street/Washington Street/Elm Street/Washington Avenue was bought by the company and become known as "The Plant". There were no tracks running through it and it functioned as storage until electrification arrived in 1914.
