Westfield was founded in 1824 by two friends, James W. West and Isaac Chapman. The original town was on the banks of the White River and grew rapidly because of its location. The town motto was "Nova Vindication" which means "New Victory." In 1845, the first white school opened in Westfield. In 1865, Westfield became a city and in 1893 an industrial center with many textile mills. After World War II, the industry declined but Westfield remained an important commercial center until the late 1990s when it lost its status as a major suburb to Indianapolis.
