In 1825, a post office called "Westfield" was established, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1872. The town's first store and mill were built by Captain James Wilkinson around 1830. At its peak development in the 1840s-60s, Westfield had a population of over 10,000 people and a school system that offered education to children as young as six years old. By 1860, however, all but one structure in town had been destroyed by fire or neglect; only two stores still operated when Union General John Pemberton attacked Vincennes on July 6 that year with an army seeking revenge for his brother's death two months earlier at what would become known as Battle Creek Battlefield. The remaining buildings became barracks for the 5th Ulysses S Grant’s Army during their siege of Vincennes; they eventually burned down in 1865 after Grant abandoned them due to weather conditions. In 1870–71 another large fire destroyed most of downtown Westfield before being put out by residents using buckets and pails full of water from local wells (). A new courthouse was built between 1871 and 1875 following designs provided by Daniel Burnham who also designed much of downtown Indianapolis including many federal buildings such as Congress Hall and Statehouse which remain extant today.
