Westfield is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was 97,642 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Indiana after Indianapolis and the twelfth largest city in the United States. Westfield is located onthe east bank of the Des Moines River, about 21 miles (33 km) from downtown Indianapolis and 25 miles (40 km) from Chicago. The history of Westfield goes back to 1847 when surveyors found what would become present-day Westfield while mapping land for a proposed town on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1853, lumberman A. J. Beeson developed a small community near where he now stands called Beesonville; it became known as Beeston because of its location close to timber resources. However, development momentum died out in the late 1800s due to factors such as lack of available water and transportation options, although some new businesses did appear along riverfront during this time including an ice cream parlor opened by John Wiegand in 1902 and later purchased by Oswego Ice Cream Works founder George Peake). In 1912, real estate developer Julius Rosenwald founded his company Rosenwald & Company with capital raised from his father'sonesourcesincluding $1 millionfrom his uncle Samuel Rosenwald Jr., then president of Morgan Guaranty Trust Co.; $500 thousand from Firestone Tire and Rubber heir Wm Fosdick; $250 thousand from industrialist Andrew Mellon; and $100 thousand each from banker James Pierpont Morgan Sr., treasurer Charles Evans Hughes, lawyer Edward D’Angelo Smith Sr., insurance magnate Andrew Mellon III, steelworker Lewis Hogg and others. With help from businessman Richard Ives White II who had invested early money in Rosenwald’s firm, Rosenwald named his new company The Rouse Company after General Electric co-founder Isaac Stern whose company White helped merge into GE in 1911 (White also served as chairman until 1943). Rosenwald & Company began construction on four townships: East Granby Township on May 10th 1913; North Granby Township on October 15th 1913; South Granby Township on November 17th 1913; and Weldon Township on December 6th 1914 which were incorporated into Westfield two weeks laterona day before Christmas just prior to World War I commemoration events being held there that year (the original town names are still remembered today). Westfield is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 16,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Westfield was made on Mayflower by Capt. John Smith and his men on October 15, 1620. At that time there were about fifty people living in the village which extended along State Road 11 north to where it crossed White River opposite present day I-65 and then south to its current location east of I-465. However, development within the present day limits of Westfield began soon after this initial pioneer effort as several adjacent parcels were purchased from various Native American groups for use as farmland or timberlands. In 1837, James Kapp donated land to serve as the town site for Westfield Township; however, nothing came of that idea until 1856 when he donated an additional parcel totaling . At this time township boundaries were changed due to railroad construction nearby and new townships emerged including Northwest (laterowned by Fort Wayne), Southside (later owned by Evansville) and Center (now in Tell City). Accordingly, on November 14th of that year residents took their final steps towards forming a government with their own elected officials – two commissioners representing each township while one commissioner represented the entire city of Indianapolis. This effort failed prior to being ratified by popular vote on December 6th resulting in no form of government existing until 1857 when election results showed James Kapp had been successfully reelected Mayor with 62% majority over John Ewing! In spite of these early setbacks much progress was made during those years leading up to what would become known as "the golden age" for East Side Township - primarily through annexation which occurred between 1865-1868 when Northwest became part of Crawfordsville; Central followed suit between 1870-1872 when it became part of Terre Haute; Southwest absorbed into Terre Haute between 1880-1885 when it became Crawfordsville again; operationally Southeast merged into Terre Haute upon purchase from Wayne County following civil War but reverted back to Crawfordsville thereafter; finally Northwest resumed annexation efforts following World War II before becoming an independent town once again! It should be noted that despite much progress made throughout these years there remained significant challenges such as numerous floods which destroyed homes and businesses dating back to 1902 including one particularly devastating event which destroyed most buildings within three blocks near Third Street & Keystone Avenue! Despite all these obstacles however local citizens never backed down from their efforts nor did they give up hope ACHIEVEMENTS WERE MADE THROUGH THE COMMUNITY DIALOGUE AND EFFORTS OF NATIVE AMERICAN OWNED BUSINESSES THAT PLAYED A ROLE IN ENDURING PROGRESS AS WELL AS MEMBERSHIP WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
