Westfield was founded in 1824 by Eliab Lansing and others as a small community on the west side of Indianapolis. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest cities in Indiana. From its humble beginnings, Westfield has built an impressive resume, including two stints as the capital of Indiana. The city is now known for its shopping malls, parks, beaches, and hospitals. Westfield’s rich history isounded at least to 1824 when Eliab Lansing and others began to plan the town on what is now the west side of Indianapolis. In that year, they purchased 1 million acres (0.8 km²) east of present-day Indianapolis for $5 per acre ($2/km²). The townsite was named after James Hennepin (1778-1847), a prominent settler who had come from Holland in 1800 and founded what would become Minneapolis-St. Paul. In 1825, Lansing donated land to build a courthouse and jail; this building remains one of Westfield’s most iconic landmarks today. The city quickly became an important transportation hub on the eastern seaboard with connections to Cincinnati via boats and wagons, Philadelphia throughriver traffic, New York City by river crossing and air travel.,and Boston via railroads. On December 12, 1830 – just two months after his inauguration as governor of Indiana – General Harrison signed a proclamation creating Westfield as “the Capital City of Indiana” under then Governor Levi Cuyler (1812-1849). Soon afterward it emerged as one of America’s leading commercial areas with thriving merchants and businesses including shipyards and flour mills along with banks and other businesses providing services such as law enforcement or architecture development. By 1831 census data showed that population had reached 25 000 people! In 1840–41 WESTFIELD INCANDESCENT BANK opened up shop here giving us our first local bank which helped start many more smaller banks throughout our great city over time! Our downtown core slowly started transitioning into something more like today but back then there were no sidewalks so you had to walk all your way around! Nowadays we have some pretty amazing streetscape beautification going on too 🙂

The first Europeans to visit what is now Westfield were French traders in the early 17th century. In 1815, when the United States acquired land west of the Illinois River from France, President James K. Polk named it after his friend and mentor General Andrew Jackson. The town was platted in 1827 and became a village in 1837. When Indianapolis consolidated with Vigo County in 1907, Westfield joined as a city on January 1, 1912. In 1930, it became one ofthe first cities in Indiana to be incorporated as an open-air museum with its own police department and fire department. On November 6 of that year (just two years after prohibition had been repealed), Indianapolis held its first-ever beer festival at PNC Park under new sponsorship from Anheuser Busch Brewery which then owned both the park and Westfield's only liquor store In 1932–1933 construction began on what would become Midwestern State University; this led to increased industrial development around the town hall site including many small businesses which continued until Prohibition ended in 1933."
