On December 5, 1938, Lafayette merged with Westfield to form a new municipality which lasted until May 1, 1959 when it dissolved due to lack of population growth and annexation by neighboring Carmel. On January 11th, 1907 INDIANAPOLIS – WESTFIELD MUNICIPality merger took place between two villages that had been separate since 1838: Lafayette (founded in 1838) & Westfield (founded in 1814).
