Westfield, Indiana is a small town in Hancock County, Indiana. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westfield is located on the west side of the Highland Hills and is bordered by Seymour to the north and east, Carmel to the south, and Fort Wayne to thewest. The first settler in what would become Westfield was James Witherspoon who started out living in a log cabin on what is now Old State Road 36. In 1827 Witherspoon married Anna Stephenson. They moved into a new cabin which they built just east of where Old State Road 36 meets High School Rd today known as Stephenson Rd. In 1828-29 James and Anna had their first child John Witherspoon who was born at their home on Stephenson Rd near present day I-465 & Westfield High School Dr. In 1830 when John was only one year old his father died suddenly at home from a stroke caused by an illness he contracted from eating corn that he grew himself from his own land next door to their home on Stephenson Rd (now I-465). After James’ death young John continued living with his mother until her death in 1840 when he went live with his maternal grandparents William Ewing and Margaret Whitehead for about three years before being taken away by Railroads because families were not allowed to keep animals on their property during those days! He finally came back to live with them after they sold all their land around 1845 so that young John could get some education! John Witherspoon became a successful businessman in westernIndiana starting out as an apothecary and later becoming president of The Joslin Pharmacy Company which later became Purdue Pharma Incorporated which still operates today as Purdue Pharma USA Incorporated! He also served terms as Mayor of WestFIELD from 1922-1925 and 1930-1935! He died November 11th, 1937 aged 86 years old after serving our community for over 60 years !
Westfield was founded in 1853 by Reverend John Newton and his wife Hannah. The first store was a small shop on the corner of First and Washington Streets. By 1865, the population of Westfield had grown to about 900 people. In 1871, the first high school was opened in Westfield. In 1907, the city became a charter city with voting rights. The following year, it annexed neighboring town of Goshen. In 1913, Westfield made headlines when it merged with nearby towns of Carmel and Noblesville to form what is now known as Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
