Westfield, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The history of Westfield goes back to 1824 when the land that now makes up the city was donated by James Westfield to be used as a military post for settlers who were moving westward during the Mexican–American War. The town was founded on October 1, 1824 by Colonel John Hays and his men who arrived from Massachusetts as part of what is known as "the great migration". At its peak in 1830, Westfield had a population of 2,000 people. In 1836 it became one of twenty-six townships organized by Indiana Territory under Governor William Heathcliff. Mayor Isaac Smith supervised construction of the first schoolhouse and courthouse in town which was erected on what is now Canal Street near the present depot on Erie Street. In 1875, when Butler County was formed from parts of Wayne and Hendricks counties (including portions of Posey and Tipton), Westfield became its county seat. In 1902 it became an incorporated city with a population over 10,000 people. That same year saw the opening of its first public library which still operates today within City Hall Park on North Main Street (). During World War II, many jobs were created in downtown Westfield thanks to defense contracts that were awarded there; such jobs include production lines for munitions manufacturers found throughout central Indiana. After years of growth and progress made by both local officials and citizens alike during this time period – including passage of ordinances establishing zoning regulations governing building heights (and other important streetscape issues) – City Council voted to annex neighboring communities such as Newiyorkville in 2003 making Westfield twinned with that community internationally renowned metropolis/township/city . Westfield is a town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westfield was founded by Nicholas Wright in 1837 as a small village on the South Fork of the White River. In 1853, Wright developed what would become Westfield into a large township with a population of 1,500. In 1870, it became an incorporated town and continued to grow until it had a total population of 25,000 by 1980. Today, Westfield remains one of the most populous towns in Hendricks County and its residents are known for their shopping malls and other commercial interests. The history of Westfeld began with Nicholas Wright who settled there in 1837 after moving from Ohio's Steubenville Township where he had been born in 1796. When he arrived in Mayflower Township on the South Fork of the White River he noticed that many people were building log cabins because they could not find land to farm or purchase elsewhere. He decided to build himself a cabin and named his new settlement "Westfeld". The first settler to arrive in what would become Westfield was James Aiken who came along with his family late in 1837 from Kentucky. 2 years later settlers John Griggs and John Hargrave also arrived followed by James Witherspoon in October 1840 from New York City when he took possession of some 40 acres (16 hectares) east of present day Main Street which included much of today's north side boroughs: Rushville and Arlington Heights as well as parts now located within Gary and Northbrook townships; these areas were then part of Steubenville Township except for Rushville which became part of west-central Hendricks County when that township was organized on November 3, 1800 under territorial government following Virginia's admission into Confederation as the United States Of America. On December 15th 1830 Indian agent Edward Clark reported 350 head+ cattle being Lakota Sioux Protestants living near Putnam Creek northwest corner DeWitt & Clinton Streets Each head bearing $10 gold pieces At this time there were no permanent white settlements westward beyond Putnam Creek so American Indians living east or northeast OF creek continued raiding our farmers crops & stealing their goods thruout this vicinity probably until about 1840 according to one source 500 strong I’ll give another source 600 strong These 300 warriors raided our farms nightly during winter months driving off perhaps 10 families each while cows/sheep frequently got caught up among them making escape difficult If all accounts are correct & oral tradition is true than between 1830-1840 over 1000 white + 600 Native Americans lived peaceably near creek bank (& few if any around present day village) This situation changed starting about 1840 when Ulysses S Grant moved US troops stationed at Fort Wayne plus 5 artillery pieces from Vincennes Arsenal across river towards us making life increasingly difficult for these friendly Indians Our earliest recorded white inhabitant here Jabez Gregg came here early summer 1847 maybe July 1st onboard USS Indianapolis @ Wheeling Point Lighthouse Gregg arrived with his son George Washington Gregg soon afterwards father built home at current siteEastwest Corner old post road leading thence
