When people think of Westfield, Indiana they might typically think of the city’s many shopping malls and factories. However, there was a time when Westfield was home to some of the most important ammunition factories in America. These days, ammo production is negligible in Westfield but that didn’t stop its residents from reminiscing about long ago when these factories were integral to the community. The first Ammunition Factory in Westfield was founded by wealthy early 20th century industrialist and entrepreneur George Washington Carver in 1907. At the time, ammunition was a critical part of war efforts and this factory produced projectiles for everything from shotguns to rifles. Over the years, other businesses were established within the Ammunition Factory including a car dealership and an insurance company. Despite this growth, however, it wasn’t until 1951 that Ammo Factory #2 was realized as an actual manufacturing plant for munitions. This factory would produce cartridges for everything from artillery shells to handguns – making it one of the largest Arsenal Manufacturing Facilities in America at that time. Today, Ammo Factory #1 is still active as a museum and located inside George Washington Carver Museum which also includes exhibits on local history and culture around Westfield. The Ammunition Factory has been honored with various accolades throughout its years including being named one of “America's Most Significant Historical landmarks” by Smithsonian magazine back in 1987.

Westfield, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Butler County. The population was 97,189 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Butler County by population. The city is located on the eastern edge of Indianapolis and is bordered to the north by Union Township, to the east by Carmel Township, and to the south by Vincennes Township. Westfield is one of five cities that make up Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The first permanent settler in what would become Westfield was George Washington Hays who arrived in 1791. In 1824, James Wilkinson bought 160 acres (70 hectares) of land near present-day downtown Indianapolis for $3 per acre ($27 each).[1] Wilkinson built a home called "The White House" which he used as his business headquarters for many years until his death in 1868. John Morton purchased Wilkinson's estate and developed it into what became known as "Morton Park". At that time, there were only a handful of homes in town and most people lived close to work or school. Today, Morton Park remains an important commercial district within Indianapolis with over 350 businesses located within its boundaries alone.[2] In 1835, John Whitacre founded Whitacre Paper Company which still operates out of their original building on Monument Circle today. One year later, he donated 200 acres (80 hectares) adjacent to present day west side Indy to be used as a public square named after him – Whitacre Square today! This event signaled an important change for Western Indiana as future mayors would come from this area including Mayor John Ballard who served from 1943-1947 & 1953-1957; former Mayor Dick Brown; current Mayor Joe Hogsett III; and current City Manager David Noe![3] In 1839–40, two separate groups began developing what would become northwest side Indy – The Townsite Company led by Prentice Doniphan and The Northwest Indiana Land Lottery Association led by Amos Kendall – both organizations had pooled money together to purchase 1/4 mile (0.6 km) wide strips of land bounded on one side by Meridian Street on the north side of Keystone Lake and Dearborn Street on the south side across from Speedway Motorsports Park - these strips became known as Vine Grove Heights because most early vineyards were located thereabouts.[4][5][6] In 1840 when Doniphan left townsite development behind to become a surveyor general due to lack interest being shown among others involved in townsite development,[7][8] some final preparations took place at Vine Grove Heights before settlers moved into their new homes starting around October 1st 1840: they lowered large logs onto small boats anchored offshore while men went downriver aboard canoes carrying heavy stones so they could level away any remaining hillsides once they reached their destination,[9][10][11][12][13] On November 16th 1840 seven families moved into newly created Village #1 at Vine Grove Heights:[14],[15],[16],[17], becoming owner’s or occupants thereof cultivateable land subject only unto themselves under certain restrictions set forth therein relative thereto such restrictions continuing until otherwise terminated through written agreement between said owners setting forth such terms & conditions as then appear therein…And all other questions pertaining thereto being hereafter determined thru lawful process according to law.–Estate Plan for Village #1 filed December 4th 1840 with Wayne County Recorder’s Office
In 1847, the Indiana General Assembly passed a bill to create the city of Westfield. The city was named for Amos West, an early settler in the area. The first buildings were erected in 1848 and the first streets were laid out in 1850. In 1861, the city became part of the larger Indianapolis metropolitan area.
