By 1890, West Lafayette had become one of the most prosperous towns in central Indiana with more than 1,000 businesses and 10% of the state's population. However, during World War I (1914-1918), much of what is now downtown West Lafayette was destroyed by fire due to military burnings conducted during the war effort; this made it difficult for businesses to re-open and led to economic decline over the next few years. However, during World War II (1939-1945), things changed for West Lafayette when its mayor decided that war production should be focused on civilian purposes rather than military facilities; this created an opportunity for industry to grow again while also providing jobs for local residents. When war ended in 1945, many businesses reopened but struggled against competition from new outposts established by companies such as IBM and Ford Motorsports Incorporated; however, these efforts eventually paid off and within 5 years West Lafayette had regained some level of prosperity before experiencing another significant decline starting around 1970s until today where it remains very low ranking among Indiana's largest communities despite having some major successes including becoming home to Purdue University since 1896 which helped spur economic growth once again beginning around 2000s although still struggling economically compared to other larger cities like Evansville or Fort Wayne etcetera WLUH has been designated as an America’s Infrastructure Hero designation by US News & World Report
