West Lafayette is a city in the US state of Indiana. The population was 17,236 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in and the county seat of Lafayette County. It lies on the west bank of the Wabash River and is bordered by LaPorte to the north, West Lafayette to the east, Purdue University to the south, and Dearborn Heights to the west. The first settlers in what would become West Lafayette were Frenchmen who arrived from Canada in 1795. They built a log cabin on what is now Saginaw Street and named their settlement after Louis-Jacques Marquette, one of several Native American guides who explored what would become Michigan Territory in 1803. The town was platted in 1809 by Captain John Fisk as part of a land grant given him by President James K. Polk for promoting agriculture within Indiana limits. In 1830, when Indiana became a state, it included parts of today's Lafayette County along with other westernIndiana counties that had been won as part of Indian Wars fought between Creek Nation members and United States forces over issues such as slavery and land grants. In 1835, when Indianapolis was founded as an important transportation hub onthe riverfront just west of downtown (present day East 67th Street), Fisk donated about 6 acres (2 hectares) northwest of his original cabin site for use as an open air market place called "Fisk's Grove". That same year also saw construction begin on what would eventually become Purdue University; at that time only a small academy with 10 students could be found on campus near where Harrison Hall stands today. By 1840, however, Purdue had acquired land extending beyond Fisk's Grove to include present day West Lafayette Township; thus becoming one of America's first collegiate institutions. During its early years Purdue was home to few than 100 students; however fast growth led to new buildings being erected throughout those years including Old Main (now Student Union), then known as "Harrison Hall" because it housed faculty members only until 1852 when women were allowed into male-dominated colleges nationwide under Title IX Of The Civil Rights Act Of1964). Today marathoners running across half marathon or full marathon distances can find themselves running past Harrison Hall every morning during their coursework! In 1861 Western Illinois College moved from Carbondaleto enter into partnership with Purdue which led to enrollment growth rates reaching 20 percent annually by 1870 which created more space for student housing on campus – resultant in Old Main becoming known as "Hilton House" after president William Hulton’s wife Eleanor Hilton (1847-1922). After decades hosting presidents & prime ministers from around America during Presidents Day weekend starting back in 1909 through current days (reigning monarchs even!) due largely to generous support from then mayor Smith & current City Manager Moran – 'Old Main' has seen countless weddings, funerals & picnics take place inside its walls celebrating our community since its inception!!!
