Gun Target History in West Lafayette, Indiana began with the founding of the town by George Armstrong Custer on July 6, 1847. The village was named after General Custer and his regiment, the Seventh United States Cavalry. A rifle range was established in West Lafayette in 1865. It was used by Union soldiers during the American Civil War as a training ground. The range closed down during the war but reopened in 1919 as a shooting gallery for tourists. West Lafayette is a city in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 20,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Anderson metropolitan area. West Lafayette is the largest city in Hancock County by population and fourth-largest city in Indiana by land area. The Purdue University campus sprawls across over 8 square miles (20 km²). West Lafayette was founded on November 10, 1824 as a small settlement called East Whitefish Creek by Methodist missionaries led by Rev. Drury Crippen. In 1827, the town became known as West Lafayette when it annexed the adjoining towns of Carmel and Anderson. The name stuck and has remained unchanged since then. The first post office in what became West Lafayette opened on May 3, 1830; it was located south of present-day Main Street near Third Street. The small town grew rapidly due to its location next to two large manufacturing plants - one operated by Daniel Drake and the other run by Isaac Myer - which attracted many new residents and businesses during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1850, West Lafayette had become an important center for agricultural production due to its fertile soil and well drained streets and squares. Many homes were built during this time period using heavy mud or brick masonry construction typical of rural Indiana towns at that time In 1855, Crawford & Company acquired some land east of present-day Main Street from Myer& Co., starting what would become their biggest business venture ever - building a railroad line through central Indiana connecting Chicago with Cincinnati via Indianapolis . This event helped drive westward migration from centralIndiana into Ohio during that decade – an exodus that would eventually lead towest Louisville’s growth within just 25 years Today’s downtown district – home to numerous restaurants, bars & nightlife venues – began expanding rapidly following Crawford & Company’s arrival with construction of First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) on Main Street in 1857 and later additions such as Armstrong Field House (now IUPUI Athletics), now home to Purdue University’s Big Ten Conference offices . These early arrivals not only set the stage for what would become today’s downtown district but also created distinctive neighborhoods which continue to thrive today: Carmel-area North Side contains several historic buildings dating back to before 1900 while South Side features newer housing developments completed after World War II During this time period there also arose a strong ethic amongst many farmers in centralIndiana towards using local materials rather than importing items primarily because much cheaper prices could be obtained locally whenever goods were needed or desired ; this philosophy continues today with some farmers still practicing “ Locally Owned And Controlled Production ” ! Aggies Mall opened up shop along Second Street in 1958 which soon replaced all other shopping options available within walking distance of students/workers living on both sides of campus . West Lafayette, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state ofIndiana. The population was 34,814 at the 2010 census. West Lafayette is part of the Lafayette metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of Indianapolis. It has been called "The Village" for years because it was once one of the most dense cities in America and its economy depended largely on manufacturing and agriculture until recently. Lafayette's history dates back to 1786 when General George Washington held a military encampment here during his tour of India as commander-in-chief. The first settler in this town was Samuel Williamson, who arrived with his family in 1787 from Virginia. He built a log cabin near what is now Elm Street and named his property "West Lafayette." In 1816, John Stephenson founded an agricultural colony here which became known as Stephenson's Townships after him; this community supported itself by growing corn, beans, potatoes, appleseed, hogs, chickens and other crops through open fields and dairy products from their cows. The townspeople were so prosperous that they decided to form their own government in 1824; this evolved into the present day City of West Lafayette Incorporated Company (CITY) which still exists today! In 1830s, James Kline bought 640 acres east of present day Elm Street from David Lloyd Wright for $10 per acre; he developed this land into what is now Kline Park which features beautiful mansions dating back to 1835! In 1836 you could purchase a share in an election for township trustee; voting rights continued to be granted until 1906! During the Civil War (1861-1865), many residents served in Illinois Volunteer Infantry units including Captain William Heninger who commanded Company I "Hennepin Independent Rangers" In 1870s Fenton Waddell started developing some land west of US 21 along Canal Road northward towards West Lafayette where he erected two homes – one still stands today (Waddell House); this development became known as "The Gables". This area eventually became home to Purdue University where students first gathered around fireplaces nightly around 1875 while playing rounders outside on campus! One can find remnants of these early student gatherings throughout downtown today – check out Old Main or Cook’s Chapel if you’re feeling adventurous! A few blocks east down Canal Road lies Waddell Blvd., also home to Purdue’s administration buildings before it relocated south across I-80 just north of Purdue Memorial Stadium! Today's infrastructure includes several local hospitals including Northwest Indiana Medical Center (NIMC), St Joseph Regional Hospital (SJRH) and Rush University Medical Center (RUSH) - making West Lafayette one major center for medical care not only within Indy but also neighboring communities such as Carmelite Health System & Highland Health Partners HCAS & more!
