A canal was built through downtownWestLafayette in 1824 which led to increased commerce and industrial development; many businesses founded during this time include Wabash Canals (now known as Lucas Oil), American Tobacco Company (now Philip Morris), Monsanto Corporation (later DuPont), Purdue University's Kapp School of Business Administration (now Purdue University–Indiana) and State Street Chocolate Company (founded by Hershey). During World War I there were many jobs available for soldiers with munitions manufacturing being one such industry; however due to prohibition laws in America these factories closed shortly after war ended In 1940 Lambert Broadcasting System merged with Time Life Broadcasting System creating Turner Broadcasting System which eventually evolved into CBS Corporation In 1951 more than half of all Phenix City residents gave up their voting rights when they passed an ordinance limiting voting eligibility to citizens who could prima facie demonstrate financial need

West Lafayette is a town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 26,574 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of West Lafayette County. The first permanent settler in what is now West Lafayette was Nicholas flashes who arrived on a ship from England in 1788. At first he farmed and butchered his animals for food, but he soon found that he loved growing corn and other plants so much that he decided to return home and start a family. In 1802, John Nicholson also moved to West Lafayette from Hartford, Connecticut and set up shop as a planter/carpenter. By 1810, both Nicholas flash and John Nicholson had families of their own and began to build homes which they called "Nicholson's Prairie". In 1832, James Kapp bought one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land east of town from Nicholasflash for $225 per acre. Kapp named this tract "Kapp's Valley" in honor of his friend and mentor Nicholasflash. He developed it into a small farming community with orchards, hay fields, barns, houses and shops. By 1836 the population had reached 100 people; by 1840 it had grown to 150 people; by 1850 it had reached 200 people; by 1860 it had reached 300 people; by 1870 it had reached 400 people; by 1880 it had become 500 people! A new courthouse was built in 1886-87 following construction of the old Courthouse on State Road 7 just north of town along US Highway 421 (now I-65). The new courthouse served as the county seat until consolidation with Terre Haute in 1907 when that city became the new county seat too! In 1930 WLUS (1300 kHz) started broadcasting from an airfield near current day Southport Rd., about 3 miles east of town limits on US Highway 421 northwest of downtown West Lafayette. In 1933 WLUS moved its transmitter site indoors after being damaged during Hurricane Hazel! The station continued operations as an FM radio station until 1978 when ownership transferred to Purdue University Radio Services Incorporated! After years offtheair operation due to structural damage caused during bad storms like Harvey & Irma we are reactivating our old AM 1330 kHz signal starting Saturday October 3rd at 10am with back up power thru Sunday October 4th !!
West Lafayette is located in the central region of Indiana, on the banks of the Raccoon River. It was founded by the French in 1775 as a trading post on the then-new frontier. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s and reached its peak in population around 1900.
