West Lafayette, Indiana is a small town located in the northwest corner of Indiana. The population was 16,898 at the 2000 census. It lies on the border of Elkhart County and Kosciusko County. The West Lafayette area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The first European to visit the area was French explorer Pierre La Salle in 1768. He named this location "New France." In 1814, Captain John Custer and his unit of soldiers marched through this area during their march from Fort Dearborn to Lawrence resistance camp on the Kansas River. This event is known as Custer's Battle because General George Armstrong Custer was killed in it. In 1824-25, Isaac Granger built a sawmill and gristmill on White River near current day West Lafayette Avenue and State Street. In 1830, he sold these mills to James Waddell who renamed them J&W Mill Company after himself and his father James Waddell Sr.. J&W Mill Company manufactured flour, cornmeal, cheese and other goods for local markets until 1857 when it became part of United States Steel Corporation which remained headquartered here until 1984 when it merged with American Electric Power (AEP) to form United States Electric Corporation (USEC). In 1872-73, Stephenson electrified main street betweenState Street and White River; this opened up many new business opportunities for West Lafayette residents since transportation then had to be obtained either by walking or riding a horse or wagon all the way to Indianapolis or by taking an early morning train that arrived there late night again! On November 15th 1890 USEC employees went on strike against management over pay issues resulting in several days of work stoppage across America’s Steel Industry! With production continuing uninterrupted however AEP management decided not to extend benefits such as holiday pay and paid vacation time so workers returned home tired but happy! Shortly thereafter AEP merged with Chicago Bridge & Iron Works Incorporated forming what is currently known as United States Bridge & Iron Works Incorporated LLC which continues manufacture westbound bridge spans over I-465 including those now being constructed under what will soon be its new name - Indiana Department of Transportation - IBDOT! On July 1st 1907 Vinson Lumber Co., one of three lumber companies operating out of this mill closed down due to lack of customers while also laying off most employees contributing significantly to West Lafayette’s economic decline during that decade; Vinson Lumber had been manufacturing downtown buildings since1892 In 1951-1952 USEC started construction on Interstate 69 linking Elkhart County with Kosciusko County; traffic increased dramatically once construction began with people coming from all around southern Indiana looking for jobs at USEC! By 1957 about 60% of all exports going into Kosciusko were shipped out via I-69 ! Today K&H Metals still manufactures products from old mill stocks here in West Lafayette thanks largely to continued support from our Mayor Jim Brainard Beginning in 2002 DTE Energy entered into an agreement with bankrupt coal company Peabody Coal Group allowing DTE Electricity customers to buy power generated by Peabody Coal's coal mines within Elkhart County from DTE Energy's own coal mine generators; this allowed ELKHART COUNTYERS accessto clean energy without having their electricity prices go up!! Today more than 2/3rds OF ALL ELECTRICITY IN ILLINOIS comes FROM CLEAN COAL GAS!!

However, during Reconstruction in America following Reconstructionism's failure to resolve race problems in America south of Mason Dixon Line (the border between Illinois and Michigan), crime rates rose markedly in West Lafayette. This led to calls for more law enforcement patrols and regulation of business activity within the city limits. In 1870-71, however, Mayor John Fenton put an end to this trend by calling for increased investment in public infrastructure within town limits that would prevent crime from worsening further. The cities of Indianapolis (founded in 1718) and Chicago (founded in 1837) experienced similar increases in population during their respective expansions throughout the late 1800s; this may have been one reason why both cities elected mayors who were committed to reducing crime trends within their respective cities boundaries - an approach known as "benevolent neglect." Despite these efforts however,crime rates continued to increase until about 1920 when they began slowly decreasing again due to adjustments made by local police officers regarding tactics used during investigations as well as increasing awareness among citizens about what could constitute Crime instead of just petty theft or property damage
