On November 11, 1814, when Indiana became a United States Territory following Mexican independence, Fort Wayne was established as its first territorial capital at what is now downtown West Lafayette. On December 16th, 1814 James Kapp arrived with his company of cavalry at Fort Wayne for service in the War of1812 against Canada In early 1815 Samuel Morse sent an electric telegraph line from New York City to Watertown (nowinknaw) in western Massachusetts across open water but it failed because there was no telephone line yet! In December 1815 John Hammond built a small cabin about four miles southwest of where Weldon Road meets Center Line Road on Cemetery Hill about two miles northeast of present day Southwest corner intersection with East Village Drive.) This site served as Hammond’s home until his death on October 5th 1830.) At this time only 2 or 3 families resided hereabouts so living Conditions were quite primitive since there were no schools or hospitals! Oh well! By 1870 many dwellings had been erected including several brick buildings which are still standing today!!!!!! The following year “The Courier & Mirror” published an article giving some idea about life back then As time passed more people started moving into this new town – primarily Scots Presbyterians who had fled religious persecution in their homeland duringthe American Revolution also German Lutherans who had immigrated duringWWI ) As business opportunities grew more prospering west side businesses like grocery stores began opening up and services like laundry became available There also developed much social activity happening at various residences such as private dances given by Mrs Knox or luncheons hosted by friends . Religious services were offered at First Presbyterian Church located just off Center Line Road .) Many residents formed organizations like Masonic Lodge #544 while others formed Odd Fellows Lodge #711 etc .) In addition plenty took part in sports activities such as football (Indiana Gopher Club), baseball (West Side Cricket Association), basketball (Purdue College Hoops Association), fencing (Hollywood Fencing Club) etc .)
