On July 4th, 1830, Lafayette's grandson John Fenton laid out what is now downtown West Lafayette with one acre (0.40 km²) each for Methodists and Baptists. At first it was onlyMethodist homes but soon other denominations were added including Congregationalists and Presbyterians. In 1871–72 John Pemberton donated land to create Purdue University which became one of America's most prestigious universities. The original grates on State Street were built to keep animals out because until1849 no animal could be kept within 500 feet (150 m)of any building on Purdue campus without getting a permit from management! Today many structures on Purdue Campus were built with fund raisers or donations from students and staff! One such structure is the old Dormitories which are still used today as offices for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity members!
The first white people in what is now West Lafayette came over the Kankakee River in 1814. They were a group of Ohio farmers who went to Indiana to trade with the Native Americans. The first white person to live in what is now West Lafayette was James Caldwell, a settler on land that would later become Purdue University.
