Washington, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first European to visit Washington was Father Gabriel de la Salle on July 26, 1686. He named it for George Washington, an Englishman who had fought in the American Revolution and later became president of the United States. The land that now makes up Washington was given to France by Treaty of Fontainebleau in 1800 as part of France's defeat in the War of 1812; when Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in 1799 he ordered all French lands east of the Mississippi River to be ceded to him as part of peace negotiations with America following his victory over Britain at Yorktown. In 1802, Lafayette visited Washington and recommended that President James K. Polk give it back to France as "a fair compensation". The town was platted by David Hackworth around 1827 and named after General Anthony Wayne (1775-1828), Commander-in-Chief during much of the Mexican–American War and one of two generals who received credit for leading Indian fighters into battle against Mexico's forces under Santa Anna near Blytheville on October 25th, 1847 - also known as "the great Day Attack" or Battle of Churubusco." It was not until 1893 that a post office called Washington opened and started serving residents from Augustana College on Main Street until it moved out in 1907 due to growing mail volume from nearby Terre Haute.. In 1910, 3% (of its population) were farmers while 97% were employed within Midwestern manufacturing companies such as Jiffy Lube Company which built a storage depot here soon after arriving from Louisville/Jefferson County KY., Maytag refrigerator plants & other heavy industrial jobs followed throughout most if not all decades since then etc... For many years Washingtons main industry has been agriculture however this percentage slowly dropped off thruout most recent decade especially due to competition from larger towns such as Terre Haute

The town of Washington was founded by him and his brother John on the neck of land that today is part of Lafayette County. The brothers built a log cabin, the first structure in what would become Washington. They also developed a small farm and engaged in stagecoach transportation between Philadelphia and Indianapolis. In 1850, they sold their farm to Wm Henschel, who later became one of the largest landowners in central Indiana.
