Washington is a town in Hardin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Historian and author H. Lawrence Payne wrote that "Washington" is an anglicized form of "Washita", meaning "the place where the wind blows." A post office was established at Washington in 1848, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first settler in Washington was Isaac Cook who arrived on July 5, 1814. Cook had been living near Fort Wayne since 1800. He moved to Hardin County with his family in 1824 and platted what would become what is now Washington Township on November 3, 1827. In 1830 he also founded the town of Decatur (now part of Terre Haute), which lay east of present-day Washington Township. In 1847, President James K. Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to lead an army into Mexico during the Mexican–American War; when Taylor reached American soil he discovered that much of his army's supplies had come through Mexico via Washington Territory! The Congress passed a bill authorizing President Polk to annex all or part of Mexican Texas without its inhabitants' knowledge or consent; Polk did so on February 21,1848 – but only after intense lobbying from Washingtonians! The annexation created a new political subdivision called West Liberty County! On March 3rd 1870, this county became one with Marion County when that county was split off from Jefferson County following militaryactions between those two counties while still under Confederate control! In 1912 Washingtons population exceeded 2,000 for the first time - this number continued to grow until 1975 when it peaked at 31% Of all households were composed of individuals over 65 years old! In addition to its large population growth rate, other important aspects of local history include: as one example – during World War II many patriotic citizens donated their homes and land to be used as airfields for the war effort; during Prohibition many businesses refused service because they were violating state liquor laws; and finally – most notably – the town's role as home base for both American forces fighting against Nazi Germany and later Allied forces engaged in battle against them throughout Europe and Asia!
Washington, Indiana was founded by the United States in 1792. The area that is now Washington and Anderson counties were part of the Northwest Territory until it was admitted to the Union as a state in 1813. The county seat of Washington and Anderson was Kokomo until 1861 when it moved to Peebles.
