Washington, Indiana is an important town in the U.S. state of Indiana and its county seat, Fort Wayne. It was founded by George Washington in 1788 as a small post on the west bank of the White River. In 1851, Fort Wayne annexed onto nearby Ft Harrison which made it one of the largest towns within Indian Territory and also increased its population to around 10,000 people by 1860. The growth of Indianapolis drove Washington's population down to around 5,000 by 1880 but it regained some popularity following the local construction industry's boom during that decade. In 1916, Washington passed an ordinance establishing daycare centers for working mothers and infants; this was followed by similar ordinances establishing schools for children aged 6-12 years old in 1919 and 1923; these were among the first such programs nationallyized within American cities. By 1930s onwards though, Washington experienced rapid decline due to several factors including decreasing birthrates among white America (due to high levels of Depression-era unemployment), increased competition from neighboring Indianapolis which developed through racial integration and urban sprawl across much of western IU., as well as large outmigration affecting both whites and blacks alike throughout much of Northwest Indiana during World War II until those areas were reopened to black residents after Reconstruction began two decades later

It was the capital of the United States from 1795 to 1800. In 1812, Indianapolis became the capital of Indiana when Fort Dearborn was burned down. The city had a population of over 200,000 by 1840. It lost its status as the capital after it moved to New York City in 1845.
