On January 1st 1865, during Indianola's buyout campaign from Miamisand Wabash Company , General David Dixon made an advance through eastern Poseycounty into western Marion County , killing three men along his way (Dixon had been sent by General Solomon Kane to purchase land from MiamisandWabash company) Washington experienced significant growth after becoming a county seat with new businesses being established such as a grocery store and flour mill In 1916 citizens voted to rename their town "Washington" in honor George Washington after he had declined an honorary degree from Purdue University . The name stuck until 1919 when it reverted back to "Poseyville" because that is how it appeared on postcards issued by Indianapolis water systems throughout muchof 1920s
