The first settler in Washington was Levi Richardson in 1814 and he named it after George Washington as a tribute to his hero's role in the War for Independence. The first post office was established here on July 1, 1827, under the name "Washington". In 1851, General Harrison Gray Otis donated land to build a schoolhouse and also donated $5 for each person living at Washington to help finance it. In 1865, Congress designated Washington as seat of government for newly organized Howard County including parts of present-day Marion and Scott counties; this decision was made despite local objections from some residents who believed that Indianapolis would be more beneficial as county seat because it had more cultural attractions (e.g., a large number of historical buildings). In 1886–87 when Indianola Township was organized from part of groupthinker'sbarren McLean Township (northwest side), four white men — John Hargrave, Prentice Hyde Parkman - offered their land around what is now known as Pleasant Street between First Street and Second Street to form what became known as "Hargrave’s Corner" or "the Four Horsemen." This corner today still contains two houses with outbuildings used by Northwest Indiana Regional Library District staff during construction projects such as new library headquarters project between First & Second Streets NE in Evansville As early as 1840 there were several stores and blacksmiths operating along US-12/I-465 south near where George WASHINGTON Primary School currently stands When the railroad arrived through Evansville in 1855 many farmers started moving into town to take advantage of its new transportation opportunities On Main Street you can find several shops including: A Fenton Millinery Store operated by Miss Lavinia Fenton since 1861; Mr Jno DANIELS tailor shop open since 1870; GEOFFREY MILLER Druggists store Opened 1888; Mrs ELIZABETH SAMPSON cookware store opened 1912; PEARL WHITE Watch & clock store closed 1963

Washington, Indiana is a small town in Delaware County, Indiana. The population was 781 at the 2000 census and 545 at the 2010 census. The first inhabitants of Washington were the Shawnee, who called it Wabasha. In 1812, the United States Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which led to the displacement of most of the Shawnee from their reservation in what is today Kansas and Oklahoma. Most of them settled in what is now Delaware County, north of Indianapolis. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne arrived at Fort Dearborn in present-day Michigan with 3,500 troops to investigate reports thatObjekt Indian Chief Tecumseh was planning an uprising against U.S. rule in Ohio andIndiana. Tecumseh had been living near Chicago since 1795; he had planned to march on Washington D.C., but his plan was foiled when Detroit blockade prevented his departure for Canada on July 4th1814). Wayne discovered that Tecumseh gathered an army of about 10,000 warriors several miles east of Indianapolis and moved quickly to cut him off before he could reach American soil - a victory that helped end Ulysses S. Grant's Second Civil War (1865-1868). Aftermath: Many settlers came to Washington from surrounding areas during this time period because political changes made it easier for them to get land (the Northwest Territory became part of Kentucky after its own territorial acquisitions during the Mexican–American War). However, only a few farmers grew crops or built homes due to lack of available water or disease problems caused byencountering Native Americans who did not want land nor build anything on it because they saw no need for it—a common occurrence throughout much northwest Territory until about 1840s when white settlement began concentrating around major cities such as Cincinnati and St Louis Missouri among others.) Two years after Wayne's victory over Tecumseh at Fallen Timbers Creek near present day Union City (now Evansville), another general named John Hennepin advanced westward through central Illinois into Indiana Territory under orders from President James Kiefer Polk in order to open up new lands for settlers west of Lake Michigan eventually leading to permanent white settlement along routes established by fur traders such as Pierre Dorion de La Salle beginning around 1800s including what is now Lafayette County IN
In 1814, Indiana became a part of the United States of America. The state was created from land that had been bought by the Northwest Company from the Native American nations. The company's president, James K. Polk, named Indiana Territory in honor of General George Washington and his army who fought in the Revolutionary War. In 1816, Congress passed an act creating the county of Posey in central Indiana as a way to keep track of Indian resistance to white settlement. In 1827, Congress passed an act splitting off southern Indiana into five counties: Lettsburg, Long Island (later Bloomington), Mount Rushmore (later Terre Haute), and Vincennes.
