The process of firing the weapon requires both hands, and since one hand must be gripping the firearm's stock to hold it steady, it was difficult for people to keep track of where each shot was going. This made reloading time very important, as well as accuracy. As muzzleloading firearms became more prevalent in North America, they began to be replaced by cartridge-primed firearms. Cartridge-primed firearms use a cartridge instead of a round in the chamber which is fired using a plunger or lever under pressure from the gunpowder inside the cartridge. In order for someone to load and fire a carbine (a rifle with a barrel less than 22 inches long), he would have had to learn how to remove and insert cartridges into the magazine(s). Carbines were also often equipped with different types of stocks so that different fingers could grip them differently - either left or right - depending on whether you were holding them like a pistol or like an infantry weapon designed for fighting cavalry. Today, many people still retain some familiarity with muzzleloading weaponry through their use of airguns - small pistols that shoot pellets without needing any ammunition other than air pressure and wind direction.
