Warsaw, Indiana is a small city located in the eastern portion of the US state ofIndiana. The population was 7,623 as of the 2010 census. Warsaw is situated along I-65 and I-69 south of Indianapolis. The history of Warsaw dates back to 1822 when it was founded as a post office named Warsaw on the east bank of the White River. The first settler in Warsaw was John Ritchie who built a cabin on what is now known as Main Street. In 1825, Polish immigrants brought over by Captain Wojciechowski settled in Warsaw and began to build churches and homes. By 1830, there were more than fifty Polish families living in Warsaw. In 1835, Poland became part of the United States after being annexed by Indiana following its purchase from France in that year. As a result, Poles had to leave their homes and businesses behind and many started anew in new locations within American territory. By 1840, most Poles had left for good and only a few remained in Warsaw. However, some Polish families continued to live in town through various business ventures until around 1880 when they all moved out again due to poor economic prospects outside American territory during this time period(*). In 1865, Colonel John Sweeny erected an agricultural experiment station at what is now known as Sweeny's Field near present day Civic Center Square which helped spur growth throughout central Indiana (*). In 1866-1868*, several stores were opened up along then current Main Street between East Washington Street (now State Road 2) and West Washington Street(*). This commercial area soon became known as "the Commercial District." It wasn't until 1907 that the first school opened up in town*(*). Polish children were taught at home while their parents worked or went back to work once they learned English *(**). After World War II*, with growing industrialization throughout America(*),Warsaw experienced rapid growth due primarily to its location atop I-565 between Indianapolis and Chicago (*). With increasing traffic congestion on I-565 every day (*), plans were made for an expressway connecting these two cities(*), but those plans never came to fruition due to political opposition from both Indianapolis mayor Andrew Johnson (D) AND Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (L) *. As one result of this rapid growth (*), numerous storefronts closed down (*), joblessness increased (*), poverty increased [*], crime decreased [*], schools deteriorated [*]. In 1990*, after years of community activism led by local business owner Stanislaus Reitschauer (), Warsaw finally got its own comprehensive plan which renovated many aspects of its infrastructure including highways *(***)! Warsaw, Indiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census and it is the smallest county seat in Wayne County. It was founded in 1827 by Polish-American settlers and its name means "place of origin." Warsaw Township was organized in 1837, while Warsaw City was established in 1845. The area that now Warsaw Township was first settled by Polish-Americans who arrived during the early 1800s as part of the great wave of emigration to America after Poland's partitions into Russia and Prussia following World War I. These new Poles were joined by other European immigrants over time, including many Germans and Slovenes who had come to AMERICA looking for a better life than what they experienced back home. In 1827, Polish-American colonists from Krakow erected a log cabin on what is now State Road 12 near present day Warsaw. The first settler to arrive in this area was John Palka Jr., who came with his family from Nowy Sącz, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, about two weeks before Christmas that year. The township of Warsaw was organized on December 10th, 1837 under the guidance of District Attorney Adam Jankowski and Sheriff John Rosiakiewicz. The first election for township trustees took place on January 3rd, 1840 and William Hamel became the first trustee; he also served until his death in 1865. The first post office opened at Warsaw on February 16th, 1840; it remained open until October 2nd of that same year when it moved to nearby Starkeville due to increased postal needs within Warsaw Township itself! On November 15th 1830 Partitions were made between Prussia (north) and Russia (south), leaving much of central Poland still Unrecognized as Russian territory despite continued German settlement there along with sizable numbers of Slovaks living near Krakow & Lvov (the Austrian Empire). This left most Poles stranded inside their own country which led some American landowners to seek an exemption from US law allowing agricultural land owned by non-Uzbeks not subject to Mexican land laws & taxation to be sold/leased/developed within United States borders without taking possession or renaming the property - hence Responding with formal letters patent granting such exceptions known as "Polish Land Exemption". A group composed mostly American Protestant farmers traveled eastward throughIndiana Territory arriving at Fort Wayne on December 7th 1830 whereupon they divided up responsibility among themselves forming three committees responsible for developing lots within village limits: one oversaw building permits; another supervised transportation routes; while yet another oversaw marketing & sales efforts! Thereafter Poles began streaming out into surrounding counties beginning with Hendricks (1930) then Kosciusko (1935), Delaware (1938), Hancock (1943), Tippecanoe (1945), Putnam (1950) followed suit over subsequent decades culminating with more than 50% current Polish ancestry residing today within Wayne County!
