There is no question that the history of gun slings in Warsaw, Indiana began with the use of firearms to defend against Indians. In 1793, a company of militia were called to quell a civil disturbance in the town. One of their members, Lt. Col. John Kapp, brought his family's rifle and Ammunition store from home to help fight off the Indians. The store was notables because it had been built by Kapp's father-in-law, Nicholas Vasa (1750-1819), who had founded the first iron works in Wayne County. When Kapp arrived in Warsaw he took possession of a rifle from one of his men and put it on display at the town hall so that people could see how effective it was for defense purposes. The next year, Kapp organized a musket ballistics club which met monthly to go overrange exercises with cannons at Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh). This club helped develop artillery training for future militiamen and also provided occasion forgunmen to socialize with one another outside of arms competition or military duty. In 1814, Captain Lewis Cass appointed Maj. George Bowen as captain of 1st Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry (IVI) and ordered him to take command of an organization known as "The Gun Slings Brigade." Bowen set up shop along Third Street east of Market Square in Warsaw and began manufacturing gun sling stocks and devices such as triggers and sights for rifles and pistols. He started out making simple stock devices but soon became skilled at creating more sophisticated slings which would allow shooters to better aim their weapons while hunting or target shooting using shotguns or pistols mounted on horseback or carts. By 1818, Bowen had two stores located in Warsaw: One dealing only guns and ammunition; the other selling both rifles and pistols under different brands - including those manufactured by Captain Lewis Cass himself - as well as supplies for army camps throughout the state of Indiana. Warsaw, Indiana is a small town located in Howard County, Indiana. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. Warsaw is known for its history and culture which has been passed down through its family members and community members. The first settlers to Warsaw were John and Eliza Hoyt who arrived in 1814. They founded the town on the banks of the White River. When they moved out of Warsaw in 1827, their children, John and Amanda Hoyt set up a farm on what is now State Road 21 near present-day Georgetown. In 1840, father John’s brother Jonathan bought land adjacent to where Warsaw now stands from David Crampton. The area that would become Warsaw was named after Jonathan’s wife's maiden name of “Waltz” which later became "Hoover". The first school in Warsaw was established in 1851 by teacher Mrs. Anna Stephenson with students coming from as far away as Lebanon and Westville. Classes began on October 14th that same year with 10 students; however enrollment dwindled over time due to lack of funding and Mrs. Stephenson's death in 1865). In 1870, Revd Thomas Fenton took over teaching at the new school while Miss Amelia Caldwell filled in for Mrs. Stephenson intermittently until she retired in 1875-76; her successor was Phebe Aiken (1877-79). In 1902 when all schools were consolidated into one district under the leadership of Mr. Treadway it was decided that Wolfe High School should be part of this consolidation so Wolfe Academy could use the building vacated by Polish Catholic Central School across State Road 21 south from present day Warsaw Middle School (now Grady High School). Because classes were held at home during World War I there wasn't enough space for both high schools so Wolfe Academy closed abruptly on September 30th 1916 with few exceptions such as Honors English class given special treatment due to wartime shortages of materials One possible reason why Poland closed down early may have been because many teachers had left for military service or because some parents did not want their children attending a public school catering only to Irish immigrants whereas those living withinPoland wanted their children to learn about their country's history even if they had no connection to Ireland . After World War I most Poles emigrated leaving behind a sizable Polish American community which slowly assimilated into American society .
