The first Europeans to set foot on the present-day Warsaw, Indiana were French missionaries in the early 1800s. The area was also claimed by the Shawnee and Potawatomi tribes until they ceded it to the United States in 1814. In 1816, General Andrew Jackson invaded Michigan Territory and destroyed a Shawnee Indian village at what is now known as Weldonville. This event signaled the end of Native American control over the area. In 1824, the government of Indiana organized as a republic under James K. Polk. Warsaw was officially incorporated as a town on February 11, 1830. The first post office was established in Warsaw on July 1, 1830. The population of Warsaw grew rapidly from its initial population of 100 residents in 1830 to 431 by 1840. By 1850, there were 10 businesses in Warsaw and its surrounding villages combined with an additional 2200 people living within sixty miles of the city limits. During this time period, Polandia (later renamed Indianapolis) became one of America's most important industrial centers due to her location between Ohio and Illinois along both railroads servicing northern sections of America with tons of goods moving every day from these two states into southern Indiana for export across Mexico City and other places northward during this time period
