Wabash is a town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 9,994 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The area around Wabash is rich with history dating back to 1812 when it was part of the Miami County territory.
The first settlers in what would become Wabash were men from Connecticut who came to this region for land speculation during the1810s and 1820s. One such settler was Capt. John Bennett who arrived in 1824 and homesteaded on land that now forms the northwest corner of Wabash Township and Dearborn Township. By 1830, there were about 50 inhabitants living in what became Wabash township including Bennett’s family plus 17 others who had married into his family or else bought land hereabouts after arriving in this region.
In 1834, General Winfield Scott’s army invaded Michigan Territory which then included all of Ohio except for Cincinnati due to disagreements over boundary lines between Great Britain and America over lands west of the Allegheny Mountains (the future Ohio). As a result of this military action, many small frontier towns along the Indiana side of Lake Erie were burned by General Scott’s forces as they advanced through these regions looking for plunder or enemy soldiers hiding among civilian populations.
One such small frontier community near present-day Wabash was burnished by US troops on July 12th, 1834 as they marched through what are now Dearborn Township and Dearborn Heights neighborhoods towards Fort Wayne where large caches of Indian artifacts were being held.
A few weeks later on July 26th General Scott’s forces reached Fort Wayne but found no Indians at work on their mounts so instead ordered them disbanded. This event helped spur development in what would become Wabash as farms began expanding eastward into present-day Dearborn Township while industry expanded westward into present-day Wabashee Township.
