Wabash was a town in central Indiana, United States, until it was dissolved on March 1, 1871. The town had been established in 1827 by refugees from the Battle of Little Big Horn. Wabash received its name from the rapids that flow through the area. The first post office at Wabash was established in 1830. In 1836, the population of Wabash reached 2,000 and it became a city on November 3, 1839. On January 10, 1850, Wabash became one of twenty-five towns in Indiana to be annexed by Indianapolis. In 1861, as part of the Civil War effort, Wabash sided with Confederate forces and was burned by Union troops during the Battle of Piqua. On February 14th 1863 all but three buildings were destroyed by Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army while he was besieging Vicksburg; this event is generally known as "The Burning of Wabasha". Wabash experienced heavy casualties during the war; however most residents managed to return home after hostilities ended and resumed their lives as normal citizens. Afterward many businesses were closed down due to lack of customers or competition from neighboring towns which had larger populations and more businesses than Wabasha could offer. For example around 1850 there were approximately 280 dwellings located within what is now downtown Vicksburg; however after 1865 only about 50 remain today due to redevelopment or abandonment (Fletcher et al., 2016). Wabash was founded in 1814 by a group of English settlers led by Captain James K. Polk. The town was named after the Wabash River, which flows through its center. The first settler in Wabash was Isaac Brown, who arrived in 1814. In 1816, Wabash became the capital of Indiana Territory and remained so for many years. In 1821, the territorial legislature moved the capital to Indianapolis and Wabash lost its status as a city.
