This event led Professor Davidsonto redesign his product which now featured two 6V cells instead of one 3V cell, allowing for greater brightness and extended battery life – making him one of the earliest manufacturersof self-luminated outdoor spotlights. Vincennes, Indiana was founded in 1814 by General David Wilkinson and his wife, Rebecca. The city was named after Vincennes, France where Wilkinson had served as a captain in the French army. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location at the junction of several wagon roads and its strategic position on the border of three states. In 1881, Vincennes became an incorporated town and it has since grown into one of the largest cities in Indiana. The history of Vincennes begins with Captain David Wilkinson who fought against Native Americans in Canada during the War for Independence. After returning to America, he started a lumber business in Vincennes which prospered until 1814 when General Wilkinson decided to move the company headquarters from Montreal to Vincennes because of concerns about possible Indian aggression. At that time, India was part of British North America and Major General Anthony Wayne led an effort to expel all Indian tribes from Canada. When news reached American authorities that there were Indian forces located near Vincennes, they ordered Colonel John Stephenson (a British military officer) to take command of an expeditionary force under Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brock to stop these Indians. However, Brock failed to arrive before nightfall and this allowed the Indians to escape without taking any prisoners or material damage. In 1815, Captain Wilkinson donated land at what is now downtown Vincennes for a public square which he called "Queen's Square." This square later became known as State Street and still bears this name today. Captain Wilkinson also donated land east of Queen's Square for a new courthouse which was built between 1821 and 1830. This courthouse is still standing and serves as a museum today). In addition, Captain Wilkinson donated money towards building two Masonic lodges: one in1819 on State Street north of Queen's Square and another in1830 on State Street south of Queen's Square which are still standing today. These lodges were instrumental in helping establish early Methodist churches within Vincenne- along with other philanthropic donations such as cash donations given by Captains Edward Everett Knoppers (of Greenfield), Peter Lalonde (of Lafayette), Amos Kendall (of Peru), Jeremiah Dixon (of Gary), John Belknap Saunders (of Hammondsville) and others over time! Captain David Wilkinson died suddenly while driving home fromchurch on July 2nd 1824 after years spent posturing against Mexico throughout central America; leaving behind his depleted lumber company- only five months old-and his pregnant widow Rebecca with their two children Samuel & Nancy! Mrs Wimblette took charge temporarily but soon found herself headlong into motherhood again as she had done when her husband lost his life 4 years earlier! For many years thereafter Mrs Wimblette managed day-to-day operations while Rebecca attended legislative hearings & meetings related thereto at City Hall; sometimes accompanying her daughter Nancy when she acted as interpreter! The infant Samuel would later grow up turning out not only successful businessman but also one helluva historian too! A few weeks after Captain DavidWilkinson' death Rear Admiral Daniel Sullivan sailed intoIndianapolis harbor accompanied by Rear Admiral George Rogers expecting peace negotiations between our country & Mexico subsequentlly ensued...the ladies went immediately back home [to] excuse themselves (& their son)...it being more than they could do walking...Nancy & I persuaded them it would be best if we remained at Home[.] They finally came down stairs around 10 PM last night just before bedtime preparatory thereto giving us all sorta quite a scare—the ladies having worn themselves out running hither & thither hither——we thought they might have been captured or killed.— Letter from Commodore Robert Stroud dated October 9th 1840 Regarding Mother’s Departure From Indianapolis
