On July 4th 1865, following Union victory at Gettysburg, Confederate General Robert Ewell burned down part of downtown to prevent any long-term damage from occurring. As a result of this event, Vincennes lost its status as a major economic center in Indiana and slowly declined until it regained some stability during the late 20th century. Erected in 1805, the Vincennes Military Academy was one of the first schools in Indiana. It educated future military officers and leaders of the state. The academy also provided education for women and girls until it closed in 1915.
